The 25th edition of “Lorca y Granada en los Jardines del Generalife” will premiere “Las gitanas cantan y bailan a Lorca”, by Manuela Carrasco

Today, Friday 31 July, marks the start of the 25th edition of the “Lorca y Granada en los Jardines del Generalife” series, organised by the Regional Ministry of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport of the Regional Government of Andalusia. The programme opens with the premiere of the show “Las gitanas cantan y bailan a Lorca”, a personal reinterpretation by Manuela Carrasco of the Granada poet’s Romancero Gitano. The production can be enjoyed over twelve nights, from 31 July to 15 August, in the unique setting of the Generalife Theatre.

 

The production’s director, Manuela Carrasco, explains that her intention is to return these poems to the Romani universe that inspired Lorca, a world from which he drew essential symbolism to create one of his most influential literary works: Romancero Gitano. Under Manuela Carrasco’s direction, Romani women take centre stage and transform Lorca’s verses into cante, toque and baile.
 

On stage, tradition and contemporary creation engage in dialogue through poetry, music, flamenco singing and dance. Lorca’s verses thus find a new artistic dimension, while these flamenco languages draw on the expressive power of his words.
 

Joining Manuela Carrasco on stage will be leading figures from today’s flamenco scene. Pedro Sierra is the production’s musical director and is responsible for adapting Lorca’s verses to different flamenco palos, as well as performing as guitarist. The guest artists include cantaoras Esperanza Fernández (31 July to 8 August) and Aurora Vargas (11 to 15 August), cantaor Enrique el Extremeño and bailaora Pastora Galván.
 

The artistic cast is completed by bailaoras Inés Rubio and Saray de los Reyes, cantaoras Samara Carrasco and Juana Salazar “La Tobala”, percussionist José Carrasco, violinist Samuel Cortés and compás by Antonio Amaya “Petete”. Granada actress Coco Reyes will also take part, linking the different musical numbers that make up “Las gitanas cantan y bailan a Lorca”.
 

The series programme will continue with other outstanding productions
 

The Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía will take to the Generalife stage with “Tierra Bendita. Tierra vieja de candil”, a flamenco suite that delves into Andalusian roots as a symbolic and creative space, where flamenco becomes the axis of expression and engages in dialogue with Lorca’s sensibility. This performance will take place on the nights of 19 to 22 August.
 

The closing event of the 25th edition of “Lorca y Granada en los Jardines del Generalife” will feature “Omega, 30 aniversario”, a contemporary re-reading of the legendary album driven by Enrique Morente. The concert will be performed by his son, Kiki Morente, accompanied by Lagartija Nick and Israel Galván. Flamenco, poetry and rock will once again come together to recover the transformative power of musical languages as a vehicle for sharing Lorca’s work. This event can be enjoyed on the nights of 27 to 29 August.
