Zambra mora

“Zambra mora” is a typical dance of gypsies from Almeria and Granada. It is believed that this dance is the result of evolution of earlier Moorish dances. It sometimes reminds to belly dance and the “taranto”.

The “zambra” was typical in gypsy weddings. At present, gypsies dance zambra in Sacromonte neighbourhood in Granada for tourists, and also in caves of Almeria. In Spain, it was banned for a period of time because it was considered a sinner sensual dance. In modern times, “zambra” was performed by Carmen Amaya, Pilar Lopez and La Chunga.

Zambra is danced in bare feet with a knotted shirt under the breast and a long skirt with wide folds in order to create a float effect in the air.
